Assassination City Roller Derby – May the 4th (be with you)

Feels super awkward shooting a new league, the handful of times I’ve shot Dallas Derby Devils it was closed practices and this feels official, well… because it’s actual “We’re selling tickets!” games. I met Wicked through Jayne (Hexa Dessie Maul) Ochoa who skated for ACRD and then for DDD, and I met Jayne in Photography class at Richland College, and she helped us out on a light painting night class. This feels really “real” official.

St. Patricks Day Parade

We got extra credit for shooting this, honestly I feel like most of the shots were super, super annoyingly pedestrian except for the very last one. Spending a good three hours walking around my old neighborhood (we used to live a block away from Half Priced Books, where this all started) taking photos of drunken and loud people, the parade had finished and everyone was filtering away trying to beat the rush out, and I had a feeling just to keep my camera on me instead of putting it away, and in a sea of green, there was this one lady with a red shirt on sitting down for a smoke. She looked as absolutely done with this nonsense as […]

College Assignment – Sensuality

Sometimes for assignments I go through the thrift shops here in Dallas to see if anything “fits” or “clicks” with what I need, a perfect synchronicity is getting this assignment for sensuality then finding a perfume bottle in the shape of a woman’s body that has iridescent flowers inside. The piece isn’t really about bodies or have any hard and fast rules, but it seemed to fit rather well, and it’s not a Studio Lighting assignment so I’m just setting up a quick home studio for this using a strobe, umbrella and natural light from the window. Sometimes now using the studio feels like cheating for my Photo II class. So I wanted to do this outside of the studio, […]

Richland College – Studio Lighting

Second time actually able to dink around in the studio by myself, was working on some of the principles that Gary McCoy was teaching us about light modifiers. There are things I’d change that I didn’t even see or visualize until I was at home during post, but for a single-light setup and one of my first attempts I’m not displeased! I still have a lot to learn but I’m enjoying seeing where I was just a couple of weeks ago and where I am now in the studio!

Aztlan Arts Tattoo Fire Show

Aztlan Arts Tattoo hosted a fire show last night! I’ve never been to one and it was pretty amazing to watch! I was grateful for having done some limited time lapse night time light painting at Richland College because I just wanted to go to this for funsies but I feel like I took some good shots (always feel like they could have been better but that’s me)! You can check out their official: Instagram, & Facebook. There’s also Izze’s Instagram and Syl’s Instagram.

Dallas Derby Devils Super Scrimmage

Jayne Ochoa invited me to photograph a roller derby practice session with the Dallas Derby Devils, and I have to say it’s amazing, I found my limitations real quick shooting indoors and with my cropped sensor equipment, and lenses. Oh man though, watching them glide across the floor like sharks and then burst through a block line, and absolutely destroy each other is insanely intense, beyond that I watched them go from gameface aggressive to genuine concern and helping out each other in a heartbeat. I’ve never even considered sports photography, and I can’t say I’m particularly good at it, but of all the things I’ve tried to do for college assignments, this is the one that resonates the most […]

Chango Botanica

Had a assignment for darkness and light, went for an esoteric meaning of the perceived darkness of Santa Muerte, which the lady working Chango Botanica was more than happy to talk about and let me meander about and photograph things, super nice atmosphere, and I’ve been back multiple times since! There’s a good article about Chango Botanica here, and you can check out their official Facebook page. Honestly though it’s absolutely worth visiting!

Aztlan Arts Tattoo

As with most things in Texas, just about any time I’d get a college assignment for something (anything? Everything!) outside it rained for an entire week, but the day before the project was due I caught a break, and ran right down the block to take some photos, and was lucky enough to meet Izze, who has become a close friend and let me inside when it started to storm immediately after the parking lot photo was taken.
