Aztlan Arts Tattoo hosted a fire show last night! I’ve never been to one and it was pretty amazing to watch! I was grateful for having done some limited time lapse night time light painting at Richland College because I just wanted to go to this for funsies but I feel like I took some good shots (always feel like they could have been better but that’s me)! This is the third or fourth scrimmage I’ve been to, and I have to admit I find it difficult not watching the action and taking photographs, but I honestly feel that roller derby photography has made me a better photographer! Jayne Ochoa invited me to photograph a roller derby practice session with the Dallas Derby Devils, and I have to say it’s amazing, I found my limitations real quick shooting indoors and with my cropped sensor equipment, and lenses. Oh man though, watching them glide across the floor like sharks and then burst through a block line, and absolutely destroy each other is insanely intense, beyond that I watched them go from gameface aggressive to genuine concern and helping out each other in a heartbeat. America Ferrera and Alicia Keys visited Richland College to encourage students to vote, it was my first time dealing with crowds and trying to keep my mind on my camera settings over the sound was overwhelming at first, but after I got used to just (mostly politely) pushing through on past people it was enjoyable if a bit insane. My wife couldn’t believe I didn’t know who America Ferrera was.
One of the worst things I’m at is actually directing people on how to pose, I feel like I’m a lot better at nature photography because I just “see” it and photograph it, I need to get better at directing people because I genuinely enjoy portraits. I’d like to move into photographing more people. My wife was nice enough to pose for a portrait assignment I have at Richland College.
One of the projects I’d never even attempted before was light painting, I’ve seen it and thought it was “Eh, gimmicky.” but it’s a lot of fun, and I honestly enjoyed it greatly, especially learning by trial and error.
As much as I hate making mistakes and missed opportunities, it makes me work a lot harder finding mistakes later and kicking myself for not measuring twice, at the end of class we actually got to go inside the studio at Richland College, it’s small but decked out with gear I don’t understand but immediately makes me want to take a Studio Lighting course! These were just quick “Hey we have 30 minutes of free time, this is what the Studio looks like!”, I had all the wrong settings, wrong iso, wrong lens, wrong shutter speed, but it really was a quick “Hey think fast!” moment and boy howdy did I not think fast at al! I had an environmental portrait project due and am lucky enough to have friends that entertain my photography!
Had a assignment for darkness and light, went for an esoteric meaning of the perceived darkness of Santa Muerte, which the lady working Chango Botanica was more than happy to talk about and let me meander about and photograph things, super nice atmosphere, and I’ve been back multiple times since! As with most things in Texas, just about any time I’d get a college assignment for something (anything? Everything!) outside it rained for an entire week, but the day before the project was due I caught a break, and ran right down the block to take some photos, and was lucky enough to meet Izze, who has become a close friend and let me inside when it started to storm immediately after the parking lot photo was taken.
